A few years ago I testified at a hearing in Annapolis against allowing Montgomery County take pension monies from Index Funds, which have a steady yield, and instead “roll the dice” on active money managers and alternative investments. I was concerned that this could lead to corruption such as giving business to big donors. But more important I asked who would manage the funds? Did the county have its own Warren Buffet? I was told not to worry the state already was investing its pension funds, and it was working. The bill to allow Roll-the-Dice investments passed. The article below from MPPI shows my fears were justified as the state is losing state worker’s pension funds. See article below
Speed cameras might be important in some places such as school zones. But if their purpose is safety, make them permanent in those places, don’t hide them. Mark them well so that drivers will ALWAYS slow down for them.
Is there any data that shows that the number of accidents decrease where there are speed cameras? It seems as if the state’s purpose in using speed cameras is to make money from them. Playing games and changing the camera positions to maximize revenue from the cameras does not make people safe. The cameras are purposely hidden behind trees and placed at the bottom of hills where speed might be temporally higher, or placed just before a sign which increases the speed limit so the driver might be accelerating to the higher speed. I do not believe this fiddling with signs increases safety but is just to confuse drivers and to make more money for the state. In fact many drivers spotting a speed camera slam on their breaks actually causing a traffic hazard.
In addition to all these issues, we need to audit the cameras to check for their accuracy.
Vehicle Miles Tax ... A Travel Tax? Whoever heard of such a thing?
It's ridiculous! It’s outrageous! It’s regressive!
How can we vote for people who propose taxes like the Vehicle Miles Traveled Tax?
That tax is regressive because it hurts people who can afford it least. It hurts a person who gets a new job and cannot afford to take it because it is further away than the current job. It hurts the grandmother whose grandchildren live 25 miles away and to go pick them up and take them home is a hundred miles for the round trip. It hurts the family who has to travel to another state to see a mother or brother or sister. It hurts when … It is just a plain hurtful idea!
With the increasing gasoline tax we already pay too much tax on miles travelled when we buy gas in this state. What is the purpose of this tax? It sounds like a dictatorial way to limit travel, to crowd people together. Is this America?
We need to reduce taxes for the hard working citizens of this state.
Vote for the District 14 team who will work to reduce your taxes
The Maryland Public Policy Institute reported that last year Maryland had zero that’s “zip” that’s “nada” that’s “no” economic growth bringing us almost to the bottom of the states and DC (49th)
How long are we going to say, “What difference does it make?” It makes a lot of difference! It discourages businesses from coming here. It encourages companies to leave. And that means fewer jobs here. It means people of means leave the state!
Where will we get the money for next year’s budget increases?
Unless we change the Governor and our legislature, it will come from you. ... Perhaps from a Vehicle Miles Traveled Tax. Vote November 4th for a change in Maryland to End One Party Rule
